Mary A. TOPE, one of the oldest residents of Carroll Co., died at the age of 95 on Sunday afternoon, February 24, 1935 at her home in Perrysville. Death resulted from paralysis, she having suffered a severe stroke in the previous week.
Mary was born in Harrison Co. July 2, 1839, the daughter of Solomon and Rachel Kanof/Kanouve) Shultz. Her marriage to Dr. Hiram G. TOPE took place in Harrison Co. on June 19, 1862. They were married by Rev. Sheridan Baker, who at one time served as pastor of the Carrollton Methodist Episcopal church. Mary moved to Perrysville with her husband, who commenced the practice of medicine there at the close of the Civil War and continued until the time of his death. He died December 24, 1900. She was a member of the Perrysville Methodist church.
She was survived by two sons, Cadmus Ambrose TOPE of Carrollton and Dr. Ulysses I. TOPE of Perrysville, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Five brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held February 26, 1935 in the Perrysville Methodist church with Rev. E. O. Morris, her pastor, officiating. The assisting ministers were Rev. H. J. Camp of Leesville, Rev. J. H. Longsworth of Sherodsville, and Rev. J. F. Cash of Carrollton. Special music was sung by Mr. and Mrs. Ray Umpleby. The pallbearers were Charles Dodd, Frank Gamble, John McIntosh, Ross Butterfield, Manuel Hendricks and W. D. Kail. Interment was made in the United Brethren cemetery at Perrysville.
