JACKSON TOPE    

   Jackson Tope, son of Stephen Tope and Jemima Kail,  was born 5 December 1832 in Jackson Co., Ohio [note 1], and died 22 February 1910 [note 2].  He married  Catharine Pillers, daughter of Daniel Pillers and Nancy Chambers, on 3 April 1856 in Carroll Co., Ohio [note 3].  Catherine was born 1832 in Perry Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio, and died 3 April 1868 in Monroe Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio [note 4]. Catherine is buried in the Tabor Cemetery.  Jackson is buried in Palermo Cemetery, Perry Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio. 

    Jackson and Catherine had seven children:

  1. Melancthon Tope, author of the Tope history cited in note 1, was born 28 January 1857 and died in 1945
  2. Albert Stephen Tope was born 31 July 1858 and died in Ohio in 1950. He married Rachel Anna (aka Annie) Simpson, daughter of Thomas Simpson and Mary Jane Parker, in Ohio in 1878. Annie was born in October 1858 in Athens, Harrison Co., Ohio, and died  in 1882 in Morning Sun, Louisa Co., Iowa [note 5]. They had one daughter; Clara Pearl Tope.
  3. Jasper R. Tope was born 6 December 1859, Carroll Co., Ohio and died before 1896.
  4. Mary J. Tope was born 25 September 1861, Carroll Co., Ohio.
  5. George B. Tope was born 11 September 1863, Carroll Co., Ohio.
  6. Nancy L. Tope was born 06 September 1865.
  7. William J. Tope was born 10 May 1867.
    After Catherine's death, Jackson married Susan Jane Simpson, daughter of Thomas Simpson and Mary Jane Parker.
            
            Jackson and Susan had four children:
  1. Martha Bell Tope was born 1 Oct 1869, Algonquin, Carroll Co., Ohio and died before 1896.
  2. Virginia V. Tope was born 11 Mar 1873, Levittsville, Carroll Co., Ohio and died before 1896.
  3. Lettie Jane Tope was born 20 September 1874, Monroe Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio, and married Peter Robertson.
  4. Thomas O. Tope was born 19 Apr 1876.

  5. Annie Simpson was a younger sister of Susan J. Simpson, who married Jackson Tope. According to a family story, Albert and Annie fell in love but were afraid the families would object,  since Susan was now Albert's step-mother. So they ran off to get married. The story goes that Jackson tracked them for two days until he found them, and convinced them to come home. By that time they were already married. They did go home for awhile but then moved to Iowa where their daughter, Clara was born. (source: Natalie Fair Albright, as told by her grandmother, Clara Pearl Tope)
