Hiram James TOPE was born in Carroll Co., Ohio on 30 Oct 1839, and died in Briceton, Paulding Co., Ohio on 9 Mar 1915. Hiram married Francis GATES on 3 December 1866 in Van Wert Co., Ohio. Francis was born 23 Dec 1846 in near Shippen, Clarion Co., Pennsylvania to Frederick GATES and Sarah BLACK, and died in 12 November 1920 in Paulding Co., Ohio, aged 73 years, 10 months, 19 days. She was baptized in the Lutheran church in early youth, perhaps in infancy. While yet quite young she came with her parents to Van Wert county, Ohio, where she was reared to womanhood.
They moved from Van Wert county to Paulding county around 1878, where they cleared up their farm and reared their family.
They had 8 children:

- Almina Lucinda TOPE (26 Feb 1870 - May 1952), married Albert CARTER, 5 March 1892
