G. Tope, son of Henry Tope and Catherine Croghan, was born 1 July
1839 in Carroll Co., Ohio [note 1],
and died 1900
in Carroll Co., Ohio. He
married Mary A.
Shultz , daughter of Solomon
Shultz
and Rachel Knouf [note 2], on 19 June 1862 in Harrison Co.,
Ohio. Mary was
born 2 July 1839 in Harrison
Co., Ohio, and died in 24 February 1935 in Carroll Co., Ohio.
At age four years, Henry was taken
to Peru, Illinois. When he was ten years old his parents died of
cholera and he was given over to his grand-parents at New
Hagerstown, Carroll Co., Ohio. At the age of nineteen he went
to Columbus, Ohio where
he stayed four years in the study of medicine. He enlisted in the 80th
O. V. I. and became a hospital steward and later assistant surgeon
[note 3].
Hiram and Mary had two children:

Tope
- Ulysses Irenaeus Tope
