GEORGE TOPE

    George Tope was born 3 March 1761 in Frederick County, Ohio, near Harper's Ferry [note 1]. Melancthon's history gave his birthplace as Washington Co., Maryland, but that county wasn't established until 1776 from part of Frederick County. He died on 12 August 1845 in Carroll County, Ohio [note 2]. George was married twice, having 24 children, 12 by each wife.
     George first married Catherine Straddler. The date and location of the marriage is not known. When and where Catherine was born and died also is not known, except that her death was before 3 June 1804 when George married Elizabeth Bower.
    George and Catherine had 12 children; three (3) of whom cannot be identified. [note 3]
  1. Susan Tope married Thomas Patterson, of Jefferson county, 0hio. 
  2. Elizabeth Tope.
  3. John Tope had one child:
    James Tope married Eliza Ann Murray on 11 April 1848 in Morgan Co., Ohio  [note 4]. James and Eliza had six children:
    1. Lewis F. Tope
    2. Laura E. Tope
    3. John M. Tope
    4. Sylvester P. Tope [note 5]
    5. Lyman W. Tope 
    6. Edward R. Tope

  6. Sarah Tope married James Mackey, 4 Feb 1840, [note 6]. 
  7. Polly Tope, twin to Sally, died young.
