ELIZABETH TOPE

    Elizabeth Tope, daughter of George Tope and Catherine Straddler, was born 15 November 1787 [note 1], and died 19 August 1866. She married Jacob Everhart, son of Elizabeth Everhart [note 2]. They had a number of children, all of whom died without being married [note 3] , except:
  1. Peter Everhart was born 20 June 1820 and married Elizabeth Sams [note 4].
  2. Jacob Everhart was born 28 May 1829; died 13 July 1907. His tombstone gives the year as 1906. [note 5].
  3. Jacob married Christina Norrick on 10 December 1854. Christina was born 18 August 1837, and died 25 December 1908. [note 6].
    Jacob and Christina had eight children [note 7]:
    1. Jacob Marion Everhart was born 16 March 1856 in Ohio, and died 23 August 1923.  He married May Fay, 18 May 1884. [note 7]
    2. Joseph Everhart was born 16 August 1858 in Ohio.  He married Maggie (Margaret?) McKee on 23 December 1886.  [note 8]
    3. Mary Elizabeth Everhart.
    4. Sarah Catherine Everhart was born 2 February 1864 in Ohio. She married Woodrow E. Davis 14 March 1897.  She did not like the name "Sarah" and changed it to "Sadie." [note 9]
    5. William L. Everhart was born 5 June 1869. He married Anna L. Jones on 31 May 1894. [note 10],
    6. Margaret Ann Everhart was born 13 July 1866; died 27 September 1869 in Missouri. [note 11]
    7. Emma Everhart was born 14 October 1871; married Charles Epperson 7 June 1900. Emma died 11 June 1954; month may be January [note 12].
    8. Cora Everhart was born in 1875; married Samuel Lyle 27 December 1903 [note 13].

      Jacob Everhart was born 22 December 1788 (1850 Census, Union Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio gives Maryland birthplace.)
      "Elizabeth Everhart, sen Mother of Jacob Everhart the owner of this record was born one (on) the first day of January A.D. (??) 1755 in Germany in Europe."
      "Elizabeth Everhart sen Mother Jacob Everhart, (??) departed this life on 31st day of January 1832 at the residence of her son Jacob Everhart in Union township Carroll County Ohio."
      (This Bible is approximately 5 ½ inches wide by 8 ½ inches long. The name Christina Everhart is written in pencil inside the front cover, according to Jesse Fay Everhart III, the current owner. Parts of some of the eight and one-half handwritten pages are missing and/or crumbling. It is in very poor condition.     3. Melancthon Tope, History of the Tope Family, 1896, revised 1980 by Austin Dale Maddux, p. 33.  Melancthon listed seven children, but the Bible gives eight names and does not  list Bertha [Return to Text].
    4. Ibid. Melancthon idenfities Jacob's wife as Miss Sams, but the 1880 United States Federal Census, Ohio, Stark Co., Perry Township gives his wife's name as Elizabeth [Return to Text].

    Thanks to Osa Bracken who kindly submitted the additional family data gleaned from a photocopy of pages from the family Bible. It should be noted that she detected five handwritings, so all entries in the Bible were not accomplished in one sitting. Further, some notes were conflicting.
